Transport America Profile | Truck Driver Spouses
A driving career can be fulfilling and challenging for the professional driver. But what’s it like to be married to a Transport America truck driver? We asked that very question to Dan Becker’s wife. Dan came to Transport America in 1998 as a student and has been training drivers since 1999.
According to Dan’s wife Liz, the assignment was difficult to get used to at first. However, after 17 years, Dan’s job is not only accepted, but also embraced by the Becker family. This acceptance can be attributed to Transport America. The company has an established list of core values among which include making sure employees spend quality time with their families. And indeed, the Becker family takes full advantage of this. On average, Dan is away from home about two weeks at a time and then home for two to two and a half days. However, when Dan is away, Liz spends her time volunteering, being a full-time student and taking care of the couple’s three children. Plus, they have another on the way!
In addition, Transport America believes that by treating all employees with respect, it enhances productivity and efficiency. Besides being a Student Driver Instructor, Dan has participated on the company’s Driver Council and plans to participate in the annual Truck Driving Championship later in June. For Dan, all of this helps keep his job fresh and exciting, and for Transport America, it also helps in improving driver miles.
So, what advice can Liz provide to other spouses? Stay busy, but also stay involved with your husband’s job and ask questions about it. The more involved you are, the more understanding you have for what he is going through. In fact, last August Liz went out on the road with Dan for two weeks to see what it was like and really enjoyed it.
And while company benefits, such as overall pay, are great, the support from Transport America is exceptional. Dan and Liz embody the core values of the company, including a positive culture. This is what makes Transport America so successful. Together, the company and team members such as Dan and his family celebrate the successes by actively working together toward building a great company.
As Liz and Dan have shown, balancing a truck driving career and a family is more than possible, especially if you find a company that is family-oriented and puts the driver first. That’s just one characteristic that sets Transport America apart from its competitors.
