Owner Operator Finds a Home with Transport America

Owner operator Paul Henley is no stranger to trucking jobs. In fact, he has worked for a number of different companies since he started in the business over 40 years ago. But for the past several years, Paul has been driving over the road as an owner operator for Transport America, and thinks he’s finally found the company for him. He said he started considering the company after seeing their trucks on the road and talking to a number of different drivers. He was impressed with the positive attitude all of the drivers had toward the company, so he decided to sign on himself. He’s incredibly happy that he did.

Paul says he logs about 160,000 miles a year as an owner operator, and smiles as he says it. He knows the figure exactly because it’s the number on his odometer. With the money he makes as a driver, he was able to buy a new truck last year, and was proud to put the Transport America name on its side.

owner-operator2When asked what inspired him to be a truck driver in the first place, let alone an owner operator running his own small business operation, Paul remarks, “Truck driving is hard, no doubt about it. It can be a seven-day-a-week job if you want it to be, and you don’t get to go home at 5 o’clock in the evening. You have to know when a load picks up and delivers, and have everything timed out and planned to get it there on time. But it’s fun to me, and I wouldn’t want to do anything else. I couldn’t be in an office job. I have to be out in the open and moving around. Truck driving’s the best way I can think of to do that and get paid for it too.”

Paul has been an owner operator for Transport America since 2010. Now that he has had the opportunity to drive for the company for awhile and find out if it is everything he hoped it would be, he has this to say: “There’re a lot of companies out there that have trucking jobs available, but Transport America is on top of the pyramid with its equipment, recruiting effort, and personnel. The people are the real difference, though it was the people that convinced me I needed to work for Transport America, and it’s the people that keep me here. They work with me. When I call in on the phone or check in over Qualcomm, I’m treated with respect. They thank me all the time just for doing my job, and they make sure I get the miles I need to keep my owner operator business making money. They really take care of their drivers, and I like that.”
